My first encounter with the weaving process occurred when I took
a B.Ed. degree at the West Sussex Institute of Higher Education,
with Art, Craft, and Design as my main teaching subject. Several
years of full time teaching followed, during which I continued to
nurture my enthusiasm for the craft whenever time permitted!
I now work full time from my studio at home in Rossendale, designing
and making hand woven scarves, wall hangings, and rugs, using a
wide range of textured yarns and fibres.
For my wall pieces I draw inspiration from the rich and vibrant
diversity of colours and textures in the natural landscape, at different
times of the day and year.
I dye all the yarns and fibres for the wall hangings myself, using
a technique called space dyeing. This involves applying different
colour dyes to a skein of yarn, thus creating a subtly multi-coloured
effect.
The scarves are woven in different combinations of cotton and viscose
chenille, ribbons, silk, cotton and other decorative yarns, creating
an exciting fusion of colour and texture.
I have extensive experience of running textile workshops for both
adults and children, in schools, colleges, arts centres and my own
studio, and have been involved with the Sheffield Children’s
Festival, as an artist in residence, for the past 7 years.
