      Peter Hall

Peter and Edna formed Pennine Studios in 1972 making a range of Domestic, Individual and sculptural stoneware from buff Moira clay with brush work, stencil and sgraffito decoration fired in an oxidising atmosphere. The work was exhibited in galleries and craft fairs throughout Lancashire and Yorkshire. For many years the studio produced Lindisfarne (Design) Pottery for the Brent Gallery in Northumberland. In 1980 the studio moved to Lowerhouse Lane. In 1992 the style of pottery changed. A new range of white stoneware with blue and green stencil and sgraffito decoration was designed. Sgraffito is a traditional form of decoration dating back hundreds of years. A coloured slip is painted onto the body of the pot; the decoration is then cut through the slip revealing the original colour of the pot.

I began the research for my three dimensional imagery in 2004, looking at basic geometric forms and taking photographs that could be used as a starting point for repeating patterns. Four geometric shapes I forms have been designed in different sizes that will form repeating 3-D patterns in a variety of formations. From my research material I have developed a range of limited edition geometric structures based upon selective photographs, processed to produce individual kaleidoscopic 3D images [framed], prints and cards.

Lectures, Commissions and Workshop
Whilst still continuing to make and exhibit a full range of pottery the studio has undertaken a variety of individual commissions, given lectures to Townswomen’s Guilds and other organisations, and developed workshops in schools on a variety of Topics linked to Foundation Stage and National Curriculum. The studio also runs individual workshops for beginners and experienced potters who wish to enjoy the craft or further their skills in Throwing, Turning, Glazing and Firing to stoneware temperatures. The workshops are supported with research material on a wide variety of pottery and design projects both technical and historical. Peter has over 40 years teaching experience in this subject covering the practical, technical and historical areas of Ceramics.

Firing Service
In October 2000 we launched a unique firing service for schools. The studio organises workshops for Staff Training in the creative use of clay, hand building, decorating, glazing, project design and lesson planning. The training is supported by the firing service where staff can bring pupils work to the studio for glazing and firing.
