I graduated in 1995 from the University of Central
Lancashire with a BA Honours degree which combined Ceramics with Art history. I
had returned to study as a mature student having spent several years working as
a journalist.
My pots are usually coil built using a heavily grogged clay which because of
its coarse, open texture makes it ideal for hand-building. I see the decoration
as being part of the work rather than an addition to it. Therefore I use a
minimum of surface decoration, relying on slips, oxides or coloured stains.
Some of my pots are burnished and all are decorative.
I derive my inspiration from shells,
pebbles, fungus, seed pods, plants, fruit, rocks, leaves etc. My pots are
designed to look robust yet elegant with the emphasis on form. Surface
decoration is kept to a minimum to enhance the tactile quality of the clay.
I am a member of the Art & Craft Guild of Lancashire and Northern Potters. I
received an award in the Best Newcomer section at the British Craft Trade Fair
in Harrogate in 1997. The award is sponsored by the Craftsman Magazine and
attracts entrants from throughout Britain in a variety of crafts including
wood, glass, jewellery and textiles.
Recently my plate design based on the book Wild Swans was selected
for exhibition by the BBC for their Women's Hour 50th anniversary
celebrations.
